AJC poll: Libertarian Gary Johnson defies gravity in Georgia

Libertarian Gary Johnson continues to defy gravity in Georgia, pushing double-digits in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution poll released on Friday. And his popularity in Georgia is making the race between Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton a neck-and-neck showdown.

For months, poll-watchers have predicted Johnson’s numbers would plummet as his GOP supporters rally around Trump. But they’ve remained consistently high, falling only slightly from 11 percent in the AJC’s August poll to 9 percent in last week’s survey.

At the same time, the AJC poll showed Libertarian Allen Buckley pulling double digits in the race against U.S. Sen. Johnny Isakson. If he can maintain that kind of support, a runoff between Isakson and Democrat Jim Barksdale seems likely.

Both are sky-high numbers for Libertarians in Georgia.

Johnson barely managed to crack 1 percent of the vote when he ran in 2012. And Bob Barr, a longtime Georgia lawmaker, had little native-son bounce here. He didn’t pass the 1-percent threshold when he was the Libertarian Party’s nominee in 2008.

And Buckley earned about 3.4 percent of the vote when he ran for U.S. Senate in 2008.

Johnson and running mate William Weld, both former governors, are polling highest among younger votes. Almost one in five voters between the ages of 18-39 indicated they are voting for the Libertarian ticket, with many saying they are disillusioned and disgusted with Trump and Clinton.

“I don’t like Clinton, but I don’t care for Trump,” said Matthew Lainhart, a 33-year-old warehouse manager from Barrow County who is typically a Republican voter. “So I’ve got to support Gary Johnson, even though I don’t feel good about it.”

Trump Pence 2016 THIS IS "NOT" ABOUT BEING DEMOCRAT OR REPUBLICAN,, IT'S ABOUT BEING AN "AMERICAN" I truly believe, that once TRUMP is our president, the corruption in our government will be exposed. This scares the hell out of the democratic AND certain members of the republican party, who own and/or manipulate the media, and are controlled by corporate big businesses, as well as, foreign and domestic interest groups. This is the very foundation these corrupt politicians use to pull this country apart. A third party vote, is a vote for Clinton. That is what these people want. To protect their own nest eggs their feathering! TO MADE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN, WE NEED TO GET OUR COUNTRY BACK! YOUR CHOICE! *It's either the NEW MAFIA Godmother of the democratic party whose suspicious activity is a death warrant for those subpoenaed to testifying against her. (natural causes) OR a man who been under fire by both the government and media because he's a man who speaks his mind and can't be bought? *It's either Hillary, who is, selling out AMERICA to foreign invested donations to the CLINTON FOUNDATION, (that comes with an unwritten monetary in return agreement) OR A man who has been funding the majority of his own campaign. Added, from donations from lower, middle class AMERICANS, and LEGAL campaign donations from supporters. *It's either a Hillary Clinton who's has lied under oath to the Congress and the American public on numerous occasion, and found involved in voter fraud. (video taped evidence) OR a man whose whole campaign is centered around, "MAKING AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!" *It's either , Hillary Clinton who has shown no success as Secretary of State? OR A man who has owned 517 businesses and only filed Bankruptcy 7 times? The list of HILLARY CLINTON'S Crimes surpasses anyone who has ever ran for a government office. Corruption, breeds corruption, that protects corruption! If even a small faction of the allegations are true, it's still a crime! To: DONALD TRUMP,,PLEASE,, keep the promises your making to AMERICA! If you really want to make AMERICA GREAT AGAIN,, give us a government we can believe in again.\ This Country has given away so much, to gain so little, from a time we call "THE GOOD OLD DAYS" WE NEED TO RETHINK AMERICAN VALUES! WE NEED "GOD" BACK IN THE HEART AND SOUL OF AMERICA! GET OUT AND VOTE FOR TRUMP! "ALL ABOARD!" Trump, Trump, Trump, Trump! TRAIN,,,GET ON BOARD!\

I would like to just point out that polls have shown Johnson taking more from Clinton than Trump. Also, Johnson obviously has no chance at winning. However, after he gets 5% nationally in November, the Libertarian party will receive "major party" status which will allow their next presidential candidate to be eligible to receive an est. $20 million grant from the FEC. A grant which both major parties take advantage of already. Regardless of the results this year, Libertarians will be a player in 2020.

Slightly, yes. But the money which funds that grant is actually a voluntary check off on tax returns. Since it's voluntary, it wouldn't violate the non-aggression principle that many libertarians base beliefs upon.

People that vote Johnson is a wasted vote just to show rebellion to Trump, he is in single digits most places, I don't know if he is on the ballot everywhere. He is a pothead and can't remember much, didn't know Aleppo, who his favorite foreign leader was, then he was sitting on a park bench next to a lady sticking his tongue in and out making funny noises. He is liberal on a lot of issues, he has not been vetted. What kind of judges would he choose. Since he could not debate don't know much about him, saw an interview was not impressed. This election is too important to give it away on a looser like Johnson. Trump 2016 to change America

Diane Chapman
Diane Chapman

Sherry J. Robinette Howard, there are some that do not understand what is at stake, they think they can play games, make some kind of statement voting for an irrelevant person and everything will be fine. People don't understand what our country will be like if Hillary becomes president. A vote for Johnson is a vote for Hillary and the destruction of our country. Don't let you ego vote for an idiot like Johnson just to stick your tongue out at Trump, take a barf bag to the polls be a real man or woman and vote for Trump. Johnson isn't going to put good judges on the court. Johnson has not been vetted in a debate, and the he couple of interviews I have seen he is an idiot, cannot answer a question what would you do about Aleppo? What is Aleppo? Who is your favorite foreign leader? Silence. Then he was sitting on a park bench sticking his tongue in and out making weird noises, very presidential, he is an embarrassment to our country. Vote Trump like a real man or woman, Don show yourself a fool voting in an idiot to allow Hillary to win, that would teach you, then we can blame those who do, don't start crying when she is elected

My Johnson vote isn't a wasted vote to rebel against Trump because even if Johnson wasn't running I wouldn't consider Trump. Johnson, along with Weld, make up the only ticket with any executive experience. They're both successful two term governors who have a well documented history of cutting taxes and growing their economies, improving infrastructure, creating jobs, and leaving large economic surpluses in their states. Johnson isn't a pot head, by the way, and even if he was... he'd still be a hell of an improvement over Trump or Clinton. Oh, and he's on the ballot in all fifty states.

Diane Chapman
Diane Chapman

Tabitha, he is a pothead, it has ruined his brain to where he can't answer a question. He didn't know what Aleppo was, when asked his favorite foreign leader he couldn't answer. Sitting on a park bench he was sticking out his tongue in and out making strange noises. His polls are only 6%, so it is a wasted vote for an idiot. Trump has had years of success as an executive and has raised children as successful executives. We don't no what kind of supreme Court justice he would put in where as we no the conservative justices Trump would put in. Johnson is not vetted since he didn't have enough votes to qualify for the debate. Johnson and and Stein need to drop out, all other candidates dropped out long before this when they saw they were losing, this is selfish and ego

Tabitha Lynn
Tabitha Lynn

Diane Chapman 1. He isn't a pot head. He hasn't smoked pot in over a year. 2. Do you think that Trump knew what Aleppo was before it was made a big deal by Johnson? I highly doubt it. After all, he thinks that China is a part of the TPP. 3. I can name a ton of foreign leaders, but I can't name a single one that I admire. He, likely, feels the same way. 4. He's quirky. So what? He's never been involved in a scandal in any way. 5. I would be wasting my vote if I were to sell myself out and vote for Trump or Hillary when I hate both of them and disagree with them on practically everything. Neither of them represent what I want in a leader. By voting for someone that I agree with, someone who has a proven track record at governing, I'm not wasting my vote. 6. Trump has a history of being extremely liberal. I wouldn't bank on him appointing conservative judges. 7. Johnson is a two term governor. If there was anything to know, it would be out there. 8. Johnson and Stein need to keep running because this country needs to put an end to the two party duopoly. We need more than two parties as those two parties don't represent many of us. It's not selfish to want better for your country than what corrupt Hillary and vulgar Trump have to offer.

Diane Chapman
Diane Chapman

Tabitha, I wouldn't expect Trump would have known Aleppo prior to running for president, there is a big difference Trump has not been in government before, Johnson was a governor and should have known. Johnson has smoked pot for so long it has caused damage to his brain. The women that came out against Trump were paid off by the Clinton's, just like all the violence at Trump rally's were hired by Hillary and her campaign, they paid homeless people 1,500 to cause a problem with Trump supporters and cause violence. Trump is a good man and has done a lot to help the private citizens long before he ran, Hillary has not done anything to help the average person. What has Johnson done to help anyone. Trump paid for a person's open heart surgery, a man was about to lose his home Trump paid off his mortgage, Trump got a soldier out of a Mexican jail on trumped up charges, he and Greta VanSustern, he paid to get him out and gave him money to get readjusted to life. Then when soldiers needed to be picked up from a foreign country, their plain was broken down, Trump sent his plane to pick them up, made several trips. Trump has done many more things. Name one thing Johnson has done to help an American in need. By the way, the news just reported that Johnson is down to 3%. A vote for Johnson or Stein is a vote for Hillary, just think about that, if you are not supporting Trump, you are supporting Hillary by default because you know Johnson or Stein can't win. Win Hillary nominated liberal judges it will be on you and all other that don't support Trump. God has been working with Donald, he has changed a lot. I used to hate Donald, when I heard he was going to run I was upset. The more I heard him the more I liked and respected him, now I love him as a person and a candidate

Tabitha Lynn
Tabitha Lynn

Do you have proof that the women were paid off? He was on tape admitting to sexual assault. Keep drinking that Kool-Aid. Vote for who you want and I'll do the same.

Diane Chapman
Diane Chapman

It was locker room talk many years ago. Most guys when they get together they like to brag about their sexual. Boy am I going to do... They like to exaggerate what they do, you know. I forgot to mention, the lady on the airplane works for the Clinton foundation, a man from England was on Judge Jeanine Pirro program, he was on the airplane he said he could see everyone on the plane, he said she was wearing a white pantsuit, the armrests back then did not go up and that there was nothing going on between Trump and Ms Leeds. One other person was acquainted with her. Her cousin came out and said nothing happened between them, she had opened up a restaurant and invited Trump, when he didn't come she got mad and said he would pay for not coming. Anyway, have you ever been on a date where a guy kissed you or try to get fresh and touch you to see if you were a loose women, they all do, you slap them and tell them you are not that kind, you don't go on the news just for touching or kissing, all guys do that.

Tabitha Lynn
Tabitha Lynn

Bragging of sexual assault is not locker room talk. It's just not. Most of my friends during my life have been men and I've never once heard them brag about sexually assaulting a woman, even when completely drunk. Even if all of these women are lying, it still doesn't excuse his vulgarity. Also, no, not all men try to sexually assault you. I've never been on a date where I was sexually assaulted. I've been with my husband for nearly a decade and he has never, not even once, tried to touch me in an unwanted sexual manner. Ever. He also says the "locker room talk" excuse is crap.

Diane Chapman
Diane Chapman

Men only brag about groping woman with other men not woman, groping is touching inappropriately, most men do try to touch women to see if they can, then brag to their male friends about it and even exaggerate what all they do, people that deny it are only lying to themselves. These accusations are not telling the truth, just Hillary trying to win. Just like Hillary hiring people to commit violence at Trump rally's and pay them, then blaming Trump. All in Wickileaks

Colby Jack
Colby Jack

I'm not making a point against Trump, it's against any political party that restricts my civil liberties. THE Democrats want to do it with gun control, the GOP with social conservative legislation. They are two sides of the same coin. The party had been around for years, people aren't as dense about supporting political parties who play tug-of-war every Presidential election, rejecting the other 50 percent of America with their backwards legislation. Gary Johnson exists to get government off of all our backs...

Diane Chapman
Diane Chapman

Colby, you know Johnson does not have a prayer of winning, he has not been vetted in issues, the few times I have heard him speak he sounds like an idiot, can't answer many questions. Trump wants to reduce the size of government, there is nothing similar to trump and Hillary. A vote for Johnson is a vote for Hillary. There are only two people that have a chance to win, and goofy Johnson is not one of them, he is polling in single digits, between 3 and 6%. Trump has conservative views on social issues very different than what Hillary wants, they have nothing in common, why not vote for a winner not a loser

Diane Chapman
Diane Chapman

Voting a protest vote for Johnson is a wasted vote, he doesn't have a chance of winning. A vote for Johnson is a vote for Hillary. Who wants to support a loser just to protest against Hillary and Trump. Johnson has made a fool of himself not knowing the answer to some questions. Then sitting on a bench sticking his tongue in and out making funny noises, not very presidential. He didn't know what Aleppo is, could not answer who his favorite foreign leader was, he should know he has been in politics. His pot has ruined his brain

Tressa Jones
Tressa Jones

Are y'all arguing over two trash conservative candidates? Vote however you want. Nobody has to rationalize or explain why they're voting how they want. Voting for Johnson or any third party candidate isn't a wasted vote (I mean, lowkey it is because the electoral college is a sham) but that doesn't make your vote for Hillary or Trump makes you a better person.
