Ever since Hillary Clinton’s surprising defeat last month, Rebecca DeHart’s inbox has been flooded by messages with the same lament.

“They all say, ‘I wish I had done more,” DeHart, the state party’s executive director, recently told nearly 200 frustrated Democrats still licking their wounds after Donald Trump’s win at a post-election gathering.

It has been a brutal reckoning for the party. Sidelined for more than a decade, Democrats are no closer to regaining control of the Georgia Legislature than they were two years ago, when they had high hopes of flipping about a half-dozen state legislative seats. Or than they were two years before that. Or two years before that.

The Democratic candidate for U.S. Senate, businessman Jim Barksdale, mustered just 41 percent of the vote despite pumping more than $3 million of his own fortune into his campaign.

And Democrats have no clear leader – and more importantly, no unified direction – as Republicans prepare for their twelfth legislative session in a row with complete control of all of the gears of power in Georgia.

Does the AJC just keep recycling this same story? Democrats have lost more seats across the country in the last 10 years than maybe in the history of the party over the same time span... Start acting MORE like Zell Miller Democrats and less like Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid & Chuck Schumer Progressives and give people a reason to vote FOR you...

Georgia was always Democratic until forced integration. Then these "Democrats" discovered they needed to be Republicans to remain racist. This change occurred in the 1960s. Remember Richard Russell and Herman Talmadge? Democrats. The changing population will crush you dinosaurs. Get ready.

How silly. But thats what democrats have been saying for years. Changing demographics won't help a party that's losing thousands of votes every election cycle to all races.

I'll remember Georgia being solid Democrat until Roy Barnes. He and his supporters destroyed the Democrat party in Georgia by totally ignoring the voters. I personally never voted republican until Barnes reelection. I worked for the Democratic party based on Barnes campaign promise to not bring the state flag up. Barnes devisive lies destroyed the Democrats in Georgia far more than integration of the 60s.

Democrats run Atlanta and have done so for more than a century. The difference is industry and progress not the party in charge!

Outside of metro Atlanta the rest of the state is stuck in the 1950's.

We gained more votes this election than the last. The country and Georgia is becoming more diverse and moving left. We are in a great position to move this state and lead this country into this new progressive age!!

surely, shelton, you're not dumb enough to believe what you wrote. the left is limping and will continue its downward spiral as long as liberals fail to change their anti-american agendas.

GA is in ZERO danger of turning blue. Atlanta and Chatham County are not the whole of the state.

Joe Fincher
Joe Fincher

Wow! That's about as dellsional of a comment as I've read in a long time. Republicans hold twice as many elected offices as democrats nationwide. Republicans are poised to pickup 10 Senate seats in 2018 without an even remote possibility of losing one. Progressivism is shunned by working Americans and had no place here.

Shelton Brown Jr
Shelton Brown Jr

Joe Fincher sorry but the data shows the country and state are trending left. By and large millennials and Gen Xers are moving more left. As the older generation dies and this country becomes more diverse so will the voting population. The 2018 Senate races are not lock ins for the GOP. As we have seen several times before. You shouldn't count your chickens before they hatch. As we saw in 2010 the country has a way of blaming the party in charge when things don't change as rapidly as they think they should. It will not be easy to combat the blatant lies of the right but truth will always prevail.

Shelton Brown Jr
Shelton Brown Jr

Marc Wilks Check the last few elections! There are things call statistics and trends they will show that this state is turning purple and then blue. As a matter of fact if the minorities in the state voted as frequently as the majority there would be more of a challenge. Because the right has conditioned the people to think Georgia is solidly red people fail to exercise their right. We will work to get that changed in the next election cycle.

Shelton Brown Jr 3141 counties in the United States and HILLARY only carried 57 . Ga voted for Trump 3 to 1 . So you do the math and see what the results are . By the way I voted Democrat in the primary .

Shelton Brown Jr
Shelton Brown Jr

Math might be difficult for you as well but a 5 point spread is not 3 to 1. Estimates Trump 2,069,000 Clinton 1,837,000 A difference of 232,000.

The current younger population have been brained washed and given participation trophies for life in general. Non leaders and no jobs to go with their schooling by the leftist machine. God help us if progressives truly take over.
