Housing prices could help explain Hillary Clinton’s victories in Cobb, Gwinnett

Over at the Washington Post’s Wonkblog, Max Ehrenfreund has a unique explanation for why Republican counties like Cobb and Gwinnett, which went for Mitt Romney in 2012, were won by Hillary Clinton in 2016.

Voters there had largely recovered from the Great Recession and its housing bubble burst. A paragraph:

Obama–Trump counties were no different from the other counties that Trump won, at least in terms of typical housing prices. Romney–Clinton counties were especially affluent, though, with a median home price above $300,000 — twice that of the typical county carried by Trump. These well-heeled places included traditionally conservative communities such as California’s Orange County, Utah’s Salt Lake County and Georgia’s Gwinnett County, which is outside Atlanta.

Public service announcement. Having a 300k house doesn't make one affluent. Watched many people lose 300k houses. The affluent people I know actually made money through the crisis

How much money did Clinton spend to lose? Incredible! But if you hire a guy like Podesta you should lose...

About the same amount as Mittens against President Obama.

Has anybody seen the $6 million that Trump promised veterans organizations back when he was campaigning? No veterans groups have seen it, so people are wondering where it went.

The only explanation is that these folk are clueless

I assume you think that's how they made enough money to afford decent houses.

Nicolas Gerrald how in the hell was anything rigged against Bernie? He only won in caucuses which suppress voter participation and non-diverse states. He was treated more fairly and given more time by mainstream media and he was un vetted nationally compared to more than 3 decades of everything being thrown at Hillary. And i never get stuck in congested roads because I have enough common sense to live 2 miles from where I work and within walking distance to all the city's amenities.

Paula Dowell Too bad the "smart" voters lost. So sad.

Sad indeed. Sad for the entire country.

The only ones that I ever see "whining" in these comments threads are the Trump supporters. If you are really so thrilled that your candidate won, why hang on to so much anger and hostility?

Less than 40% of Americans have a college degree. Keep spewing your DNC sheep talking points. Nobody cares. This is why you lost. Putting down fellow Americans who are the majority of 60% "uneducated" as you sniff your farts in smug arrogance. Enjoy your latte.

Paula Dowell Hey. Just wanted to tell you, I'm fine. You unicorn lovers should sit this one out and drink a whine cooler or 10. Sincerely, America

Paula Dowell your attitude is exactly why Trump won.The people in those counties are not any smarter nor more well informed than counties that went for Trump. How about the hundreds of counties that flipped in Trump's favor? That seems much more telling. But I'm hoping Democrats will continue to believe it was lack of education and Fox News that lost the election for them. That assures more Republican victories.

Mark Lee What hundreds of counties in Georgia flipped for Trump? It is specifically Georgia that is being discussed here. Hillary Clinton won 45 percent of the vote in Georgia this year which is the exact same percent that Obama won in Georgia in 2012.

Sheryl Meyer But that's just it---she's not "whining". She isn't writing these articles, she isn't posting them or reposting them, and she isn't holding press conferences that are constantly broaching the subject. She hasn't really bothered anyone with anything since the election.

I haven't seen any "whining" from HRC, I think your reading comprehension just sucks and you don't understand journalism.
