Mike Pence: I am ‘so disappointed’ in John Lewis

Vice President-elect Mike Pence said he was “so disappointed” in Georgia Rep. John Lewis for boycotting Donald Trump’s inauguration and questioning the legitimacy of his election.

Pence told Fox News on Monday that he urged Lewis and the growing cadre of other House Democrats skipping Friday’s swearing-in ceremony to reconsider.

“I served with John Lewis and I disagree with him on many issues,” he told the news station. “But I respect the role he’s played in the civil rights movement and the voting rights movement. That’s why I was just so disappointed that he would make the statement that he made suggesting that President-elect Trump is not a legitimate president.”

Trump took to Twitter on Saturday to say Lewis was “all talk” and call his Atlanta-based district a “crime infested” area that is “falling apart,” a day after the Democrat told NBC’s “Meet the Press” that he will skip Trump’s inauguration next week because he doesn’t see him as a “legitimate president.”

Pence and other Republicans have skirted Trump’s insult of the district – which spans much of the city of Atlanta and its inner suburbs – and focused on the Lewis comments that provoked the incoming president. He said Trump critics “ought to be standing together this coming Friday celebrating a peaceful transfer of power in this country.”

“For someone of John Lewis’ stature to lend credibility to the baseless assertions of those who question the legitimacy of this election is deeply disappointing,” he said. “I hope he reconsiders it.”

The Republicans disrespected president Obama for 8 years and now they want the American people to just follow them blindly, I don't think so the American people are smarter than that

In all the years I've kept up with politics, I have never witnessed the ill behavior against the winner of the presidential election. No, Trump isn't perfect. In his campaign, O said the deficit was "unpatriotic" and that he would NOT run for a second term if he had not cut it in half during his first term. He said we could keep our doctor, health insurance plan, and insurance would be "affordable." He drew a line in the sand against Assad in Syria for killing thousands of his citizens and he backed down. That and other incidents of "milk toast diplomacy" led to Russia's bold move into Crimea, China's claims of international waters belonging to them, and one of the worst errors in judgement, pulling all our troops out of Iraq, leaving no support for the frail government. His name "JV team" to describe ISIS was laughable. And don't even get me started on the ineptness of Hillary with her "pay to play" scheme while our Secretary of State, deleting over 33,000 emails when subpoenaed by the FBI, and ignoring desperate pleas for help, allowing our ambassador and three defenders to be killed and mutilated. And, if it was the Russians who exposed the DNC emails, that's all they did. Yeah, that was awful, but they only turned the spotlight on the hypocritical, corrupt manner in which she ran her campaign. No arms twisted, no threats made to vote one way or another; just exposed the truth. So, Hillary and O defeated Hilary. Trump has already had a very positive impact on business and jobs, and hasn't even been sworn in. I honor John Lewis for his courage during the Civil Rights era, but he has joined the "victim agenda" espoused by the likes of Al Sharpton, Jesse Jackson, and others. He has lost relevance in expressing such divisive rhetoric.

Mike Pence, Rep. John Lewis' record speaks for itself and your trivial opinion is irrelevant.  You really need to be thinking about how you are going to bring some degree of rationality to that guy who is about to be the 45th President of the United States.

How unfortunate on the Day we celebrate the Life and Legacy of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. we find ourselves in this period of political discourse and racial upheaval. The community of man is under attack, the table of Brotherhood is under siege and political correctness has all but disappeared, when will the the moral arch of the universe Dr. King spoke of ever bend toward truth, justice and equality. Just think, if we start talking to each other, instead of talking at each other. if each of us would light a candle in our hearts and pray for an America where color is no longer an issue and race no longer a barrier, the dark clouds of racial prejudice will disappear, the fog of racial discrimination will be lifted, the blue sky of brotherhood will be revealed and together we shall all walk to the top of the mountain, look over and see the dream of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. finally become a reality.

Pence: How can you possibly not understand that Lewis AND most of the country don't see Trump as a legitimate president? I think you completely understand! If Trump's problems are a result of awful communication skills, THEN SAY SOMETHING! If we are all misunderstanding what he is trying to do, SHUT HIM UP! Now he's attacking the EU?! What the hell is going on here!? What you people are doing to this country is treason and I hope you burn for it!

It's our right to disagree and not be labeled a racist. Maybe John Lewis should read his oath of office. Maybe he should love his fellow man and not judge them. Maybe he should review his religion. Maybe if he wants respect he should give it. Maybe he's to busy cashing his check from tax payers to represent them. Just maybe!!! Think about it. He marched and worked for inclusion and now he excludes himself. So so sad!! John Lewis

John Lewis tarnished his reputation. He fought for civil rights all of his life. He took an oath of office to uphold the Constitution. And now he doesn't uphold his oath. Hypocrite

And most of us are disappointed that your partner in crime Donald, the Tea Party and some politicians started the birther movement of President Obama not being a legitimate president. How does it feel now?

Didn't hillary Clinton help start the birther movement when she lost to Obama in 2008?

Ivan Ramos
Ivan Ramos

There is speculation that she did started the movement during the 2008 primaries, but there's not much evidence about it. However, the ones that brought it up (or again, if Hillary brought it up the first time) were Trump, the Tea Party Movement, some GOP's and other several people for so many years, even after President Obama showed his birth certificate. Even though supposedly Trump finished the birther movement I'm pretty sure he wants to bring it up again, especially there are still others investigating his birth certificate.

John Lewis' skills are in sit ins, protesting, marching, or stupid comments.  He is so useless as a Congressman.  I doubt that he has ever been the initiator in any meaningful bill in Congress.  He is just not capable of doing such.
