Silence and solidarity: Georgia Republicans on Trump’s refugee decision

052114 ELX Senate primary CC9

There was mostly silence from top Georgia Republican elected officials on President Donald Trump’s executive order to keep millions of foreigners out of the country. But there was a surge of support for the controversial policy from Trump’s self-styled outsider allies in Georgia.

“This is looking forward. This is inheriting a mess and trying to determine: Is there a problem here, or is there not?” said former Rep. Jack Kingston, a Savannah Republican and one of Trump’s go-to surrogates on cable news.

The order blocked all refugees from entering the United States for 120 days, indefinitely barred Syrian refugees from coming into the country and suspended citizens of seven countries from traveling here: Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen.

The order, which took effect Friday afternoon, created chaos across the globe as scores of refugees were detained at airports in Atlanta and around the nation. A federal judge’s order temporarily prevented the government from deporting some arrivals.

Bruce Levell, the head of Trump’s diversity coalition and a likely candidate for Congress in suburban Atlanta, echoed the president’s argument that the measures would help prevent terrorism.

“For the last 8 years, radical liberals have weakened our borders, made deals with terrorist countries and jeopardized American security interests,” he said. “President Trump’s executive order is exactly what our nation needs to ensure that radical islamic terrorism finds no safe harbor on American soil.”

Meanwhile, most members of the state’s congressional delegation were mum on the refugee policy over the weekend, and requests for comment from most of them went unanswered.

Republicans Rick Allen of Evans and Buddy Carter of Pooler voiced support for the order.

“In the world we currently live in, it is smart and necessary to put in place the most robust national security vetting process ever to know exactly who is entering our country so we can continue to welcome those who believe in America’s freedom and share our values,” Carter said.

Allen said the move “keeps Americans safe until we can reform our visa process and the vetting of refugees.”

Some local activists quickly embraced the move.

Harry Abrams, a Cherokee County Republican, called Trump’s order an “attempt to restore sanity” to the nation’s immigration policy – and a first step toward curbing illegal immigration.

“Our country has legally defined borders and the lawful right to protect those borders,” said Abrams. “The utter failure to respect the laws on the books and circumvent those laws by the past Administration has made a mockery of what we stand for.”

Georgian REPUBLiCAN congressmen are pure political puppets, have no mind of their own, They have no morals, no integrity, will not represent their constituents, just party, no matter how wrong the party is. They too will be remembered as traitors .

Obama bombed and killed thousands in 5 out of 7 of these countries, where was the outrage then?  So, when Trump wants to pause and make sure we are vetting these people properly, he is the bad guy? Pure hypocrisy by the left.

You mean the guy that chewed out the CIA and then bragged about what a great speech he made to them after already disparaging all the POWs and draft dodging four times? Hell to the no. This usurpur will never get my respect. Just tap your feet together like a good SS officer and say Seig Heil cause he's as awful as a Nazi. This is just the beginning.

President Trump is at least doing SOMETHING to keep this country safe from terrorist. The very people who are outraged at his actions would be outraged if terrorist blew up a school full of children. YOU CAN'T HAVE IT BOTH WAYS! It all comes down to this....is keeping the Muslims happy more important than the safety of your family?

Obama banned refugees  from Iraq for six months in 2011. Trump did not select the seven"majority Muslim" countries. Obama's Dept.

of Homeland Security targeted them as "countries of concern" as part of the terrorist travel prevention act of 2015.

Per Obama administration orders of 22 Sept. 2016--just before the election--4,681 Haitian immigrants were detained and are still held in jails with criminals.

Wasn't it part of your job to report on those events?

Senator Perdue may be silent on refugees but he certainly is not silent about approving of the deaths of millions of women given his support of the Anti-Choice March in DC. Illegal abortion kills women or has Perdue not bothered with his homework? If Senator Perdue wants to reduce abortions, he needs to support accessible affordable contraception, science based sex education in Georgia schools, and affordable healthcare for women. He could also support child nutrition programs, affordable safe childcare and educationa/career programs for low income mothers. So far - Senator Perdue seems silent on those issues too. The only thing Senator isn't silent on is supporting the potential deaths of millions of women if abortion ever becomes illegal. David Perdue does not support Georgia women. He only supports death. So now Senator Perdue - let's actually hear you support some life for a change and give us a positive statement on refugees, the value of immigrants, and actual human rights and dignity because we really need that right now from our lawmakers. Be a leader for once Senator Perdue.

My, my oh the dramatics! Death of millions of women??? As a 70 plus yr old woman, mother of 3, I beg to differ. There are and have always been many choices of birth control throughout my lifetime. Even more now. There is absolutely NO reason to use abortion as birth control unless the woman has been raped or her health is seriously in danger by the pregnancy. Even then I have seen doctors on TV explain how the baby can be taken alive in most cases if a mothers health is in danger. That particular issue doesn't usually arise until much later in the pregnancy anyway. All the issues you listed should fall under personal responsibility, but most of them already exist. Ga offers all kinds of benefits to women with children...WIC, Healthcare, Medicaid, etc.

These Republicans are not valid Americans. They are like St. Peter on the evening before the Crucifixion. When the going got tough, he denied Christ. Power is more important to them that honesty, and they have no investment in the Constitution and Bill of Rights. If they even bothered to read them in the past ten years. By running for office they offer themselves up to public scrutiny. They have earned contempt. Kingston, for all his charm and affability, denied evolution on the Bill Mahrer Show. Saw it myself. Weak thinking begets weak judgments, and we see it now.

I used to like Jack but he is looking more and more like a Trump puppet. He's not very good at explaining Trump policy on CNN either. Seems to mumble and stumble around.

When he repped GA-1 and I was new to the territory, I contacted him several times regarding policy one of us was supporting so he could take advantage of another point of view or so I could understand his. To his credit he always responded (I know he had staff for that but the buck stopped with him.). HOWEVER, the responses never made sense and I wondered if he had gotten letters from others missed up with mine. He is just not the sharpest knife in the drawer and therefore not a capable legislator.

Trump is fulfilling campaign promises. He's doing what the people put him into office to do. Smear jobs and character assassination had no effect during the election. It will have none now. We saw what the opposition offered during the Obozo era of tyranny and lunacy. That's why they lost over 1000 seats and the presidency. Trump is working to make America great again. Not sell us out to the globalists and force a bunch of absurd and depraved nonsense down our throats. Go Trump!!!

Donald Trump ordered a stop on immigration from seven countries. None of the major attacks committed or attempted in the United States since 9/11, including 9/11 were committed by people who were from any of those countries. Trump's order begins by invoking 9/11 three times. 9/11 hijackers were from Egypt, Saudi Arabia, UAE and Lebanon. None of those countries are banned. There are 204 Million Muslims in those 7 Terror hot beds. There are 1.5 Billion Muslims not included. So is it really a Muslim Ban? The Media leading sheep around by their noses still?

No to Kingston's comment. What was done is making a mess out of a fake problem. Why penalize people already vetted? Why leave out Saudi Arabia, S Sudan, Turkey .. because the Pres does business there? Poor policy planning and execution at the least. Perdue and Isakson don't have a clue so that's why they don't have comments.

During a rally on August 21, he said he gets along well with Saudi Arabia. "They buy apartments from me," Trump said during the Alabama rally. "They spend $40 million, $50 million. Am I supposed to dislike them? I like them very much.” Jus in case you are wondering why Saudi Arabia wasn't apart of the ban.
