Top Georgia Democrats choose a side in race for DNC chair

The Democratic Party of Georgia’s two top officials endorsed former U.S. Labor Secretary Thomas Perez’s bid to lead the Democratic National Committee, saying Friday he’s the best candidate to bring the newly-energized party’s fight “straight to Donald Trump’s doorstep.”

State party chair DuBose Porter and vice-chair Nikema Williams announced their endorsement of Perez a week before DNC members arrive in Atlanta to pick between 10 candidates in the running to rebuild the fractured party.

The two said in a joint statement that their decision was not easy, but Perez is “best suited for the monumental tasks ahead.”

“Secretary Perez has made a commitment to the return of the 50-state strategy strengthening the Democratic Party from the ground up by strengthening state parties, recently using Georgia’s victories in Cobb and Gwinnett as examples,” read their statement.

“Secretary Perez has never shied away from a fight, and we need that fight brought straight to Donald Trump’s doorstep,” it added. “He has the vision, he has the record, and he has our support to lead the DNC.”

The fight over DNC chair has all the makings of a repeat of the bruising Democratic primary, where an establishment-backed Hillary Clinton squared off against Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders’ insurgent campaign.

This time, Sanders and other progressive powerbrokers are backing Rep. Keith Ellison’s bid for DNC chair, as are party heavyweights like Sens. Chuck Schumer and Elizabeth Warren. Perez has support from allies of Clinton and former President Barack Obama.

Other leading contenders in the race include Jamie Harrison, the head of the South Carolina Democratic Party, Pete Buttigieg, the mayor of the Indiana city of South Bend, and Sally Boynton Brown of the Idaho Democratic Party.

The battle has divided many Georgia politicians. Former Atlanta Mayor Shirley Franklin and current Mayor Kasim Reed have also endorsed Perez, while Rep. John Lewis officially endorsed Ellison. He called the Minnesota Democrat “a trusted partner to harness this protest energy into rebuilding Democratic Party.”

Tyrone Brooks should be the DNC's main man, just wait till he gets out of jail and put him in as Head, after all he has skills at raising money

He'd fit right in. He's full of hate and enjoys labeling people just like a typical liberal. I mean look how great that's worked out for you people in the last eight years. Over 1000 losses!! Lol

Exactly. Remember how labor faired under his tenure as secratary?(hint: it was the time during which the DNC completely lost touch with working class people). #Keith4DNC

No it's the Clinton's and the Obamas and the DNC who don't think the rules don't apply to them. Your hypocrisy speaks louder than your lies and BS.

Cobb Gwenitt victories, that's laughable. Nothing but yankee carpetbaggers, bringing northern liberalism. What do they have, high taxes, high crime, poor schools and blight. Like Sherman s March they seek to destroy everything in its path. It don't matter who they pick to lead the DNC, this party has shown their true colors and America loving people what nothing to do with it.

There you are in your trailer park casting judgment on millions of people who live in ATL and suburbs. There's a reason Colleges and Universities are never built in your rat infested trailer parks and run down tract houses built in the fifties. You and your neighbors can not even get the grades to get into those institutions of higher learning.

Obviously since your incoherent ramblings reveal you're a lib common sense eludes you. But that's typical with you people.

lololol yeah, Gwinnett is such a dangerous oppressive slum. Damn Yankees!

Vance Croft, again you mistake college education with intelligence in your screed. You obviously equate indoctrination as intelligence Pity. Your second mistake is to equate trailer trash as some sort of unintelligent life form sucking the teat of government. May I remind you that there are two Georgias Atlanta and the rest of the state. This is the reason Georgia voted for Trump and why Georgia remains a Red State.

Anthony Negri Yeah, because half the state votes against their own interests because of white rural conservative identity politics. It's just as stupid as leftist identity politics, and just as harmful to the country.

Why must liberals label everyone. I will always vote for self interest and that what people should do. Self interest, liberty, freedom may be old tired words, but it is what makes this country and state. This country was founded on self interest, self reliance, it enbraces the individual not the collective. You are wrong to compare conservative identity to that of the left for they are not equal.
