Georgia governor race: The 2018 contest is about to heat up

Lt. Gov. Casey Cagle and House Speaker David Ralston are two potential contenders to succeed Gov. Nathan Deal.

Georgia’s race for governor is expected to formally kick off within weeks, but the emerging contest is still shrouded in mystery.

Republican Lt. Gov. Casey Cagle and Democratic House Minority Leader Stacey Abrams are all but guaranteed to enter the 2018 race, likely after the legislative session ends. They’ve lined up supporters, pitched to donors and signed up campaign staffers, and both seem to be the prospective front-runners in their primaries.

Secretary of State Brian Kemp signaled he would run, too, notifying supporters this week that he was in the race. Twice elected to statewide office, the Athens Republican has dropped hints for months that he would run as a business-minded conservative.

But Donald Trump’s victory, and the surge of Democratic energy that’s greeted his presidency, has shaken up the rest of the field to succeed a term-limited Gov. Nathan Deal.

Will an outsider businessman with no political experience emerge on the GOP side? Will Democrat Jason Carter reprise his 2014 challenge? And will other high-profile names — Sally Yates, David Ralston — join the race?

Those questions will be answered. And soon.

Casey Cagle has played a major role as a roadblock in the fight for medical cannabis. The night he let the clock run out on the original bill he turned and smirked at the crying families.

Be nice to get an independent for once. Break away from the main two parties and do things a little different.

I wish I could "like" that a thousand times ! It's incredible how many southerners still believe the Republican Party has their best interests in mind with all its current actions ! It's like they're brain dead zombies.

What, exactly, have Democrats done for the "best interests" of Georgians?

Bradd Craft name just one republican bill that's favored citizens over corporate interests in the last 10+ years. Our republican congress blocked every jobs and veterans bill for the last 6 years and McConnell has openly bragged about it. Just look at what Washington republicans are currently attempting to do with social security, Medicare, etc. Republican politicians work for the corporations that line their pockets and not for the people who elect them. If you're still not aware of this you should start researching with CREDIBLE SOURCES. Republicans simply can NOT run the US or its economy successfully and have proven it over & over again. The last 2 times the US has had a republican president & republicans controlled both houses we got the Great Depression and W's disastrous recessions. How people can continue to vote against their own best interests by voting republican is beyond me. All any republican politician has to do to win votes is claim to be Christian & even if his actions prove otherwise, his supporters will follow him into the pits of hell. Again, do YOU'RE OWN research with CREDIBLE SOURCES.

Brian Kemp, the guy brought before a Senate Committee on his purging of voter lists primarily where a disproportionate number of African Americans were on. #DontRunBrian
