DeKalb officials demand new early voting sites for 6th District runoff

Karen Handel and Jon Ossoff.

DeKalb County elections officials are set to consider whether to open additional early voting sites for Georgia’s 6th District runoff after prominent politicians complained their constituents had no easy access to a polling place.

State Rep. Scott Holcomb, who represents a DeKalb district that includes parts of Brookhaven and Chamblee, urged the county’s elections director to set up an early voting site in the eastern stretch of the district to adjust to “heightened traffic challenges” after the I-85 bridge collapse.

And Brookhaven Mayor John Ernst said in an interview the city will offer Briarwood Park as an early voting site to serve a swath of the district.

“The lack of early voting sites suppressed votes south of Dunwoody, and we look forward to opening more,” he said. “This is a nonpartisan issue. It’s about making it easier to vote at a time when people are going to be traveling.”

DeKalb elections director Maxine Daniels told Holcomb the board would consider the requests at its May 11 meeting.

Nearly 55,000 voters cast ballots at about a half-dozen early voting sites across the district, which spans from east Cobb to north DeKalb. But Democrat Jon Ossoff’s supporters raised concerns that the bluest part of the district – an ITP swath from Brookhaven to Chamblee to Tucker – had no early voting sites.

Former state Rep. Sally Harrell tweeted a photo of a graphic created by New York Times polling analyst Nate Cohn that showed turnout for left-leaning voters plummeted in lower DeKalb, and called for new sites in Tucker and Chamblee to open two weeks before the June 20 vote.

Republicans could make a similar request for more early voting sites in east Cobb and north Fulton. State Sen. Brandon Beach, who represents an Alpharetta-based district, said Republicans will make an extra push for early voting this runoff because many potential supporters of Karen Handel will be on vacation on election day.

“We need to be stressing early voting because on June 20, a lot of people will be gone,” said Beach. “June is a vacation month for many of my constituents and we all need to come together and emphasize early voting.”

You're not very good at demonizing; you haven't realized non-demoncrats are on to you.

I don't think they are afraid of it. Probably didn't realize the demand. I'm all for it. Will give more time to check for fraudulent voters and illegals. No problem

It was reported that 25 had voted and that was in one state. Good way to check to make sure it doesn't become more prevalent in elections to come.

Illegals there has only been one illegal that voted in the Presidential election and she voted for Trump. Actually I believe she had a visa... The myth that illegals are voting is only a strawman to make it harder for minority's to get to the polls. Unless you quote Fox fiction or Alex Jones, even Brietbart you will find that the myth of illegals voting is only that a myth...

Only one illegal voted in the presidential referendum last November and that person voted for Trump? Do you have a source on that or did you make it up?

According to Trump thousands of illegals and dead people voted and the presidential election. Trump of course wouldn't lie... I think he said they all came from Georgia.

Ask yourself: why are some people afraid of allowing more access to people exercising their basic rights?

Ask yourself why these issues are only issues when democrats lose an election?

Zachery Gaskins

They have always been issues to me. But in general, poor people outnumber rich by several magnitudes, so the question is why the system is perpetuated when in theory it should be outvoted constantly? Because the middle class is made to feel they're going to be rich "soon", and the only reason they're not is because the poor exist.

Ted Wetherby

Zachery Gaskins Not only are they told they will be rich soon, fingers are pointed at the poor and they are what is holding you back, they are taking your tax dollars. Then comes the cuts then the tax breaks the wealthy save millions a yr the middle class save 1,000 a year.

Zach, their Betters at FoxNews and Hate Radio have dictated that their followers are to oppose early voting - so they mindlessly repeat it. If you say otherwise - you are the enemy.

Word....taking is associated with Democrats and all they stand for. Love Trump who is about making America Great again instead of constant hand outs from those who are always Taking.

All the democrats do is go after you're basic rights. The 1st, 2nd, and 10th amendments are under attack. Obama told the whole nation the he has a pen and phone and if congress doesn't act them he will. What is your definition of a basic right?
