Karen Handel raises more than $1 million a week into Georgia 6th runoff

Democrat Jon Ossoff may have raised an eye-popping sum of money in the lead-up to last week’s 6th District special election, but Karen Handel responded with an impressive haul less than a week into the runoff.

The Republican’s campaign said Monday afternoon it raised more than $1 million since she advanced into the runoff.

“We expected a surge of donations since Tuesday’s special election, but we never expected this kind of momentum,” the campaign said in a fundraising email earlier Monday.

After a bitterly fractured first round, Republicans aim to send a message to Democrats hopeful they can flip Tom Price’s old House seat that the GOP is united. Gov. Nathan Deal, the state’s congressional delegation and former Republican rivals are all lining up behind Handel.

The former secretary of state will likely get another fundraising bump Tuesday, when the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and the Georgia Chamber are set to formally endorse her in Alpharetta.

Ossoff’s campaign has yet to announce its fundraising total for the first week of the nine-week runoff, but the Democrat could very well surpass Handel. In the hours after he captured 48 percent of the 6th District vote last Tuesday, Ossoff’s campaign told the AJC that it took in more than $500,000.

Meanwhile, Ossoff on Monday challenged Handel to six debates between now and the June 20 runoff.

“Publicly debating the issues that matter the most to Georgians, especially as it concerns growing the local economy, cutting government waste, keeping Americans safe, and bringing accountability to Washington, is paramount to ensuring that our democracy is as transparent and accessible as possible,” Ossoff said in a statement.

Handel’s campaign seemed open to the idea.

“We welcome any chance to highlight Jon Ossoff’s inexperience and are excited to have a robust debate on the issues,” said Handel spokeswoman Kate Constantini. “He can start by explaining why he wants to represent a district he doesn’t even live in and how we should expect him to represent a conservative district when his campaign is fueled by the far left fringes of his party.”

The 6th District race is shaping up to be the most expensive House race ever. Outside groups and the two parties are pouring money and resources into the suburban Atlanta district as they battle for control of the national narrative about how President Donald Trump is impacting early local elections.

She doesn't speak for me, and I vote.

I bet those billionaires are desperate for Handel - one more vote for their great tax windfall at the expense of the rest of us. One more vote to remove environmental regulation so dirty air can choke our kids. I bet Handel will get lots and lots of money from Wall Street so she can help dismantle financial regulation so Americans can lose their houses and savings again. You bet Handel is going to pull in that big money ...

Let the money rain in ... The woman still hates voters' rights and accessible healthcare. And she'll still represent conservatives' desperation to take our consumer rights, foul our air and water, and hand out billionaire tax breaks like candy. You want your medical insurance premiums to explode, and your kid preyed upon by unscrupulous college lenders and credit card companies that won't have to disclose financial obligations, that's your choice, but it sure isn't mine. And I want someone who bothered going to college voting to decide if my kid goes to war ... Sorry but all the money in the world doesn't erase conservative policy that hurts my family and incompetence.

I love how we raise millions to check yes or no on a ballot. Meals on wheels could use that money. Or poor people. Literally anything else besides politicians

Better keep an eye on that money!

And I'm sure not one penny came from a donor outside of the 6th district.

Handel is worthless. She is getting national GOP support because she is the best of the horrible GOP candidates. She is still a horrible choice.

At this point does it matter who wins? Will one more in the White House help stop this covert take over of America that is happening? Money talks BS walks. We have been sold out. Don't you get it? All the other countries have fallen or are falling. Look at the UN, the Netherlands, France, Germany, and all the others. We too shall be under One World Rule or die. There will be no more America and you are helping to make it happen. You do not get something for nothing. Just ask your local and state governments how much they sold you out for. How much to take in the enemy and look the other way? ..I 'm just asking

She does not represent the 6th District. It is not a "Republican District" -- we just did not have a choice for many years. Newt and later, Tom Price, ran unopposed. Now, we have a viable candidate who really can represent us, Jon Ossoff. He is well educated (graduate degree from the London School of Economics) and he seems very sincere and hard-working. His parents live in the district, too, and he grew up, here. Hey, Karen, we don't buy your HATE and we really didn't like that you destroyed the Susan Komen Foundation.

Shira Newman

why is he 'viable' for your district? I'm asking because he doesn't live in the district, his money isn't from the district, and he is very young with little experience.

Pam Sezgin

He has plenty of contributors in the district. Remember that the 6th is the wealthiest district in Georgia. Also, what about the millions of dollars that the Republican National Committee and their PACs put into the race so far? Republicans like to lie that no money is coming from outside of the district, but the NRA loves Karen Handel, as do the KOCH Brothers. Dan Moody's commercials and those of Bob Gray in the April 18 election were paid for by PACs.

He is 30 --- that's not that young. And he has good work experience plus he runs his own film company.

Karen Handel, she's the one that nearly ruined the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure. She was an awful Secretary of State, which is why she, so far, has not been elected to any public office she has run for since.

Most of her "job-creating" voters wouldn't even hire her without a college degree, but as long as she has an R beside her name, they'll throw money at her and give her a district to run in the ground.

I mean, unless someone can pass some national election standards to get national-level party money out of state and local elections and PACs out of our elections in general, it's a neutral action when either side does it. I can have issues with the ethics behind it and praise candidates that manage to do well without it, but both sides would be stupid to not use their available resources in a tight race.
