A 6th District rift over the House healthcare plan in Tom Price’s old turf

Karen Handel and Jon Ossoff.

The last Republican attempt to repeal the Affordable Care Act sent a jolt through the race to replace Tom Price in Congress. And the latest attempt is again exposing a stark divide between Republican Karen Handel and Democrat Jon Ossoff on healthcare policy.

House Speaker Paul Ryan planned a vote Thursday on the bill to scale back vast sections of Obamacare after adding $8 billion to the measure to help cover insurance costs for people with preexisting conditions – a sticking point that led many Republicans to bolt earlier this week.

Handel said in a statement Thursday she would support the measure after signaling last week that she was “extremely troubled” with a provision that would have exempted members of Congress from the changes. That loophole has been closed in the latest version of the legislation.

“Obamacare is collapsing. It is important that we not let the perfect be the enemy of the good,” said Handel. “Today’s vote is the first step in a long process.  I remain committed to working toward a full repeal and replacement of Obamacare that works for all Americans.”

The measure faces stiff opposition from Democrats, healthcare providers and even some Senate Republicans who worry it does too little to protect people with preexisting conditions who otherwise would struggle to find affordable insurance. Ossoff echoed those concerns in an interview on Wednesday.

“The latest draft that I’m aware of is significantly worse than the American Health Care Act precisely because it does even less to protect those with preexisting conditions,” Ossoff said. “And those are children and families here in Georgia who need to be able to get affordable health insurance despite a preexisting condition.”

He later said in a statement that he “strongly” opposes the bill, adding: “This bill puts Georgians’ lives at risk. Congress should put aside partisan politics and work to make affordable insurance and quality care available to all Americans.”

The rift has particular resonance in Georgia’s 6th District, a conservative-leaning swath of Atlanta’s norther suburbs long represented by Tom Price. As Trump’s new health secretary, Price is the point-man to implement any plan that made it through Congress.

The district, which spans from east Cobb County to north DeKalb County, has been in GOP control for decades and sent Price back to Congress every two years by double-digit margins. But Donald Trump’s narrow victory in the district in November’s presidential race gives Democrats hope they can flip the seat.

This is the problem....you don't even have to read the article. You KNOW how both of them would have voted. It has nothing to do with the benefit to the country....only to their party.

Another reason why Ossof is the most refreshing thing that could happen to the 6th District.

The GOP doesn't want us to have ANY KIND OF PROTECTIONS..NOT EVEN FROM THEM. Paul Ryan knows that to lower his own millionaire tax bracket he needs to repeal the ACA, and reduce Medicare/Medicaid funding. Tom Price is pushing the lies also. The GOP Congress is now the American Deal Panel and they will let you die so that millionaires and billionaires can have tax breaks.

Been listening to Tom Price sell his health plan all week. I just moved to Atlanta a year ago and can't figure out what the hell the 6 sees in this schmuck. Is he even human? Has he always been like this or is this Trumps influence on him?

Mary, you couldn't back that statement up if your life depended on it. But, I'm betting your life doesn't depend on it (or at least you don't think it does), so why not go with what your ill-informed gut tells you? Maybe you should listen to the Pope a little more and steer clear of the eschatological thinking that apparently guides you.

Stop thinking of healthcare reform as more regulation. There are protections that we need against the insurance companies. The GOP bill does not address this. And, Truman was the first President to propose Universal Healthcare...which Australia has (like all other Democratic nations) and Trump just praised.

P. S. The job market has seen exceptional growth in the last 4 years and jobless rates have decreased dramatically as well. Not sure where you are getting your information...maybe Faux News?

More lip service from trump. He says one thing, and does something TOTALLY different.

It's thought of as more regulation because it IS more regulation. A LOT more regulation. Obamacare is killing jobs by small business. Small business creates over 68% of the jobs in America and Obamacare has devastated that job market.

Morris Devereaux I'll have to disagree. The ACA was created for protections. It is a misnomer to continually call things regulations, when many pieces of legislation are in place to protect people from greedy and unethical companies and individuals. It is a shame that we have to legislate "doing the right thing," but that is one side effect of free market Capitalism. If the insurance companies would "do the right thing" automatically, we would not need these protections. And, I am a small business owner, and the ACA has largely saved my life and my business.

Morris Devereaux

How can you possibly disagree that ANY bill is not regulation. That's the definition of a bill. And these "protections" of yours are requirements that force private business to make a decision between growing and adding jobs or stagnating....and clearly the job market has shown what the reaction is. And how does it protect anyone when it is failing across the country? When insurance companies are pulling out of state exchanges? When it will go bankrupt within a year?

Sue Anne Morgan
Sue Anne Morgan

You are believing some lies that are being told to you. The ACA originally had protections to ensure that insurance companies couldn't back out or gouge prices. But, the GOP controlled Congress wouldn't allow them, so Aetna and others backed out because they could. The problem is with the insurance companies and if you can't see that, then I can't help you understand why we need protections.

45,000 people died annually because of no health insurance prior to the ACA. President Obama was saving lives. The deranged psycho in the Oval Office and the Republicans are killing people and then they bring in beer and celebrate this in the rose garden. Did you see that? Threw up in my mouth a little.

It's funny how abortion gets dragged into these debates as though only the extremely liberal godless ones are getting abortions. I know a great many republican pro-choice women who've had an abortion. A few who've taken their daughters in for the same. Abortion is used by the liberal and conservative alike. Abortion has been around for hundreds of years. Making it illegal doesn't stop abortion. But it does bring back black market and coat hanger abortions, which kill women. All it does is make abortion more dangerous. This is why many republicans supported Roe v Wade at its inception. Look at how the court ruled in that case. And when you support a bill that guts Medicaid spending - healthcare for the poor, disabled, and elderly - I know you aren't pro-life in the slightest. Especially since the funds that were cut are going for a tax break to those households making over $250k/year. This was a tax break for the wealthy at the expense of the poor. Plain and simple.
