State lawmaker takes aim at ‘safe space’ at Georgia college

Administrators at Columbus State University quickly discovered the pitfall of creating a “safe space” initiative on campus. They ran afoul of a prominent Republican who doesn’t like them.

The school shuttered the program, which involved fliers distributed to denote rooms that were a “safe space” to allow students to talk about their concerns, shortly after it was launched in the middle of the spring 2017 semester.

The safe spaces were immediately noted by Fox News and other conservative news outlets — which caught the attention of state Rep. Earl Ehrhart, R-Powder Springs, who chairs the higher education appropriations committee in the House.

The Columbus Ledger-Enquirer reports that he fired off an email to John Lester, a CSU vice president, calling the program ‘ill named.”

More from the Ledger-Enquirer:

But he said in the email that he was especially concerned with projects that purport to promote diversity on campus. He said the terms diversity and inclusion in the campus context “have no bearing on the actual dictionary definition. They are words to hide the utter bigotry and non-inclusiveness of the academics who use them.”

He told the newspaper he wasn’t singling out the university, which he said does a “better job than most.”  Ehrhart added:

“I think the university did right by going on and changing what they were talking about. Anybody can be a counselor for anyone who is going through a difficult time. Imagine if you provided counseling to a young Christian individual … a lot of these leftists on campus would rather you provide counseling to a terrorist than a young Christian. What Columbus has done is say this is inclusive now for everyone,” he said.

“That’s the problem I have with these safe spaces, they’re full of people who are so weak, they can’t have their ideas challenged.”

This is from the pig who called the cops when a constituent sent him a mean e-mail? Ehrhart is a joke and a predator, and like most bullies cowers and cries the moment someone strikes back.

Are we talking about adults attending college who are basically scared children who need protection? Damn. They grow up in "protected from reality" homes where they think the bible is real and this is the result.

Apparently you have not read the Bible. It is about taking responsibility for your actions and growing up to be a person of morals and principles. If you understood this you would know these kids were definitely not raised in Christian homes.

Check it out, the GOP, with a monopoly on Christianity, can't stand the weak. Go figure. No wonder they hate poor people too.

Very very true, it's sad and pathetic that anyone needs a safe space.. mental health help is what they need.

College is supposed to be about furthering an education to prepare those students to go out in the work place and become dependent. So how are these kids that want to go hide in safe spaces going to take care of themselves in the real world ? This country is growing more stupid everyday due to the obsurdity of the leftists who don't know the difference between their big toe and their elbow. Woe to the future generation.

I dont listen to conservative talking points. Mostly because conservatives in GA voted for a 2 time college drop out named Karen. Lost all respect. At that point their opinion on college doesn't matter. They only care about it when it promotes their agenda.

Taryn O McCoy Most of us ignore pitifully ignorant progressive talking points such as yours. You have to have respect before you can lose it. You have none. Just sayin.

Good for him, let no "snowflake" be graduated from a University System of Georgia institution. There are no such :safe places: in the real world, neither should their be on a state campus.

GA lawmaker is correct in his quote. If they were okay with having their idea challenged, they wouldn't need said safe spaces, nor would they defend them, nor would this publication.

See all the name calling from those complaining about safe spaces? Yeah, I'd much rather surround myself with people who actually discuss the merits of an issue minus cheap name calling. Dismissing safe spaces just means that you're as easily triggered to anger by a new idea as these so-called cry baby caricatures you have to mock. If compassion is such so scary that you have to make fun of it, I suggest you check yourself.

Little Lady... I've spent 30 years of my LIFE Giving Compassion as an RN... there's NOT A DAMNED Thing Scary about Compassion! HOWEVER, Maturity Dictates there is a Time & Place for ALL Things! If all is well on the Hospital Floor, You can spend your Entire shift Listening & showing Compassion... But if there's a Heart Attack Happening, A Baby Birthing Blue & Not Breathing, A Soul Screaming in Absolute Agony of Uncontrollable Pain, An MVA Bleeding Trauma Crashing through the O.R. Doors ~ Your Nurse can't sit and listen to how Someone Hurt Your Feelings! IF All is Quiet, I have! LIFE Ain't SAFE, Kids! Your Naivety is what triggers Anger because You Want something that don't Exist! Certainly The Charleston Prayer Meeting Victims thought their Church was Safe and A Prayer Meeting Sacred - they're Now DEAD! When hospitals & churches aren't SAFE, NO Places on Earth are! But You kids don't get it.... May God Have Mercy on Your Souls!

That is not what safe spaces are all about. The whole idea has been twisted and the actual concept is mostly unknown to it's detractors.

Good you want a safe space, go to your bedroom and cry. How about write in a journal? Why are you putting it on the sidewalks for all to see in chalk, then cry when someone challenges you?

A few years back I went back to school as an adult. When I took advantage of some on campus counseling to deal with the stress of going back to school while being the primary care giver of a disabled adult plus two kids the counselors had stickers on their doors that said they were a safe space. To the naysayers. This does not mean the space is where one cannot be challenged by new ideas. It is where people who have been sexually assaulted can go to calm down from anxiety attacks because something reminded them of their assault. People who have been attacked for their gender identity or sexuality know they won't be treated like second class citizens or that they should have never been born. It is where our combat vets can go if something sent their minds back into the conflict zone while their bodies are still present. Trigger warnings are for topics which can cause panic attacks or depressive episodes so that anyone who knows what their triggers are can mentally prepare to deal with the subject. Not get out of it completely, but can take an extra anxiety med. Can practice whatever helps them deal with those subjects. I have a hard time discussing death because of my spouse. A random conversation with some friends where the topic of death came up, and I started to have a panic attack and had to ask the subject be changed. If I had known the subject was going to come up I could have prepared for it and wouldn't have felt myself go into fight or flight mode. I didn't run out of the room. I didn't yell at my friends for bringing up the subject. Hell.. even I was taken by surprise by my reaction. But now I know that it can be a problematic subject for me so I can be more self aware next time the subject comes up.

Reality IS and Education is to Enable One to Deal with Reality! Thank God for a Lawmaker who recognizes Nonsense, and IF he'd intervened in a certain college educated young man's life before he went off to the Real World of North Korea, he might be ALIVE Today in the SAFE & SPOILED SPACE of the United States! That is the Responsibility of Government which cannot control other Nations but can prepare its' youth for the Reality of their Unique Cultures! Kids who want Safe Spaces Need to Grow Up... otherwise they are in for a Rude Awakeing at Whomever's Hands. Sometimes the "Mean" people are actually doing you a Favor - Protecting you from the EVIL Ones!
