Georgia 6th: Handel stocks up for re-election campaign

U.S. Rep. Karen Handel has about $430,000 left in her campaign coffers as she braces for what could be another grueling election bid to represent Georgia’s 6th District, according to campaign filing reports.

After a wider-than-expected victory over Democrat Jon Ossoff – winning the most expensive U.S. House election ever – the former Georgia secretary of state has hired top staff and readied her re-election bid. The filings show she raised a total of $6.3 million, which includes nearly $700,000 from PACs.

Ossoff’s final campaign filing had not yet been posted, but through the end of May he had raised $23.6 million – an unprecedented total.

Campaign filings show spending in the race, which pitted 18 candidates competing to succeed U.S. Rep. Tom Price, pushed well past $50 million as it became a nationally-watched proxy fight between Democrats and Republicans over Donald Trump, the healthcare overhaul and the battle for suburbia.

The June 20 runoff drew about 260,000 voters – eye-popping turnout for this type of special election in Georgia that helped power Handel to a 4-point victory. Ossoff, 30, has not yet announced whether he’ll challenge Handel next year but said that he’s “not done fighting.”

More: A coda on the 6th District campaign

Some other takeaways from the final filings from the other top Republicans:

Republican Dan Moody, a former state senator, wound up putting more than $3 million of his own money into his failed campaign for the seat. He raised another $130,000.

Republican Judson Hill, another former state senator, took in more than $640,000 in contributions – and lent his campaign another $160,000 from his bank account.

Republican Bob Gray, a former Johns Creek councilman, also dipped deep into his wallet, loaning his campaign $500,000 atop the $330,000 he raised.

I don't like to see politicians in office that are owned by the party. Karen Handel is owned by the R Party. The Republicans need politicians like Rand Paul and John McCain who will stand up to DT when they disagree. You will never see Handel disagree with the President.

That's fine-little miss rubber stamp for the party will trip herself up and we will be waiting. She did before and she'll do it again. She's a greedy little witch and can't help herself.

Her campaign and her people stole over 1,000 Jon Ossoff signs. She doesn't fight fair or have any policies of her own.

Maybe the ossoff people shouldn't have been waving their signs in peoples faces and blocking entrances to the polls and their signs wouldn't have been confiscated.

One of the most IGNORANT comments I've seen on FB in a long time. The irony is, the "absolutness" of your comments makes YOU the racist, Doug. But, I suppose believing as you do, you wouldn't have noticed that.

When you can't grasp the basics of written English you are either a troll, paid bot, or just plain lack the cognitive ability to fully understand what's going on around you.

No she is not! \U0001f644 That pathetic little weakling boy that you leftist lunatics wanted to elect, would have been nothing but trouble. This current anti American, criminally corrupt democratic regime, and all of their depraved and criminally minded supporters are the disaster! Democrats are the party of reckless destruction and is why in the last 2 years, they have lost over 1,000 seats! Which is quite a lot of seats and says a lot! Trump kept his red states, won every single key state, and took 3 significant blue states that are now our new red states, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin and Michigan. Not only did the Dems lose the presidency in the election, they lost all of their real positions of power. And the Dems have continued to lose elections since Trump won as well. We are on a mission to remove as many demonic democrats from even the smallest positions of power as possible! And are succeeding. We will make sure that Georgia always remains red.

Oh Mary Anne Carpenter how disturbing it is that you are so blind, like so many in the good state of Georgia. I guess if you are a white person it is easy to just be ignorant and pat other white people on the back for nothing. I have had enough experience with travel and education to know when I see a small minded bigot like Handel. Ignorance is not the way...try reading and get off facebook and fox news...you will do much better and you wont be so clueless.

It is bad reporting to keep repeating that  Karen  raised only $6 million on her campaign and Jon raised $23.  When you include outside GOP groups raising money for Karen, their campaigns spent almost equal amounts of money. Karen was not overspent or overraised by Jon. Why do you keep skewing the numbers like that!
