Ted Cruz endorses David Shafer in GOP race for lieutenant governor

U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz, a rallying figure for social conservatives in Georgia, this morning endorsed state Sen. David Shafer’s campaign for lieutenant governor.

Shafer, who is now Senate president pro tem, would replace Casey Cagle, who is running for governor. From Cruz’ Facebook page:

David is an unapologetic conservative and has a strong record of fighting for greater opportunity and more prosperity for all of Georgia from his time serving in the state senate.

He has also demonstrated his support among Georgia grassroots Republicans in this race by convincingly winning the straw poll conducted at the Georgia Republican Convention.

Cruz finished third in last year’s Republican presidential primary, behind Donald Trump and U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida. But Cruz has much sway among Christian conservatives in Georgia.

Moreover, the Texas senator’s reputation as an insurgent within party ranks good prove helpful to Shafer. The Duluth Republican is a 15-year veteran of the Senate – and might need future protection from “insider” accusations.
