Georgia 2018: Ex-Coke exec picks a side in LG race

State Rep. Geoff Duncan. AJC file.

Republican Geoff Duncan picked up support from former Coca-Cola Enterprises executive John Brock, who said he wanted to back a candidate for lieutenant governor who “knows what it’s like to sign the front of a check and not just the back of one.”

Brock, who retired as the bottling giant’s chief executive in 2016, said in the statement that he’s endorsing the state legislator because of his entrepreneurial experience. Duncan led several health startups before seeking to succeed Lt. Gov. Casey Cagle, who is running for governor.

Duncan said he’d be a game-changing candidate who would “end the ‘pay-to-play’ culture that has been such a part of the fabric of policymaking in our state for too long.”

He faces two other Republicans in the contest: Senate Pro Tem David Shafer has racked up support from several prominent politicians and business leaders, including former House Speaker Newt Gingrich and GOP mega-donor Bernie Marcus. And state Sen. Rick Jeffares had a surprisingly strong fundraising quarter.

No Democrats have yet announced a campaign for the state’s No. 2 job.
