Fort amps up his radio wattage with high-profile help in Atlanta mayoral race

Democrat Vincent Fort is out with a second new radio ad boosting his bid for Atlanta mayor, this one featuring former Gov. Roy Barnes making a populist pitch for the candidate.

“The big shots and billionaires have enough politicians looking out for them,” said Barnes, who endorsed Fort in December 2016. “Regular folks need someone to fight for us.”

It’s the second radio ad released in a week by Fort, who was once the No. 2 Democrat in the state Senate. An earlier spot decried corruption in City Hall and proclaimed himself a firm outsider who was “not part of the good ol’ boys club.”

The populist talk doesn’t just set him up as a natural opponent to term-limited Mayor Kasim Reed, his frequent foil. It’s also aimed at mayoral rivals with roots in City Hall – and there are about a half-dozen of them.

Here’s a taste of what Barnes said in the minute-long ad:

Friends, too many politicians talk a good game and then they let us down. But let me tell you about a candidate for mayor of Atlanta that we can count on to do right by us: Vincent Fort. When I was governor, we had to fight the Republicans to take down the Confederate flag. And it was a tough fight to protect folks from Wall Street’s predatory lenders. But as state senator, Vincent Fort stood with me to do both. We can count on Vincent Fort to make sure City Hall works for working people – not just the insiders.
