Bottoms calls for AG inquiry into racist robo-calls

Atlanta candidate for mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms. Curtis Compton, ccompton@ajc.com

On the same evening that an independent poll put Keisha Lance Bottoms in the lead for the first time, the Atlanta mayoral candidate demanded that the state Attorney General Chris Carr investigate a Friday afternoon racist robo-call that urged listeners to line up behind her “to keep Atlanta black.”

The automated call was attributed to Bottoms, who appears to be in a neck-and-neck race with Mary Norwood, a fellow councilwoman who is white. Bottoms is African-American.

The calls profess to be the work of “Citizens for Keisha,” which the candidate denies. From Bottoms, in the press release:

“I find the robo-call personally disgusting and such tactics have no place in this election.  The calls are also illegal.  I hope the people responsible are revealed and they suffer the legal consequences they deserve.”

The calls appear to be targeted at east Atlanta and Buckhead communities, an indication that they are intended to drive up white votes. Listen to it here:

A quick transcription:

“Keep Atlanta black. Vote Keisha Lance Bottoms. A vote for [City Council President] Ceasar Mitchell is a wasted vote. Only Keisha can stop the white takeover of City Hall. On Nov. 7, vote Keisha Lance Bottoms to keep Atlanta black.”

This isn’t the first instance of a “black slate” move in the mayoral race. More background on dirty tricks can be found here.

Why is the robo-call "racist" when a paid campaign ad featuring John Lewis, Andrew Young & Shirley Franklin for some Black candidate pulled the race card and declared if the Black candidate didn't win, there would be a return to the days of Bull Conner's hoses and fire dogs ?

@SaveAmericaFromItself The candidate was Reed running for his first term, wasn't it? Black Atlantans were terrified then of a white mayor, and  they are apoplectic now because there is an even greater possibility of that happening.

The racist perps involved in the disgraceful German Shepherds and fire hoses ad were John Lewis (like, duh), but it was disappointing to see Franklin, and especially Andy Young, involved in such a smarmy endeavor.

But, while such a blatantly racist political ad coming from the other side would have been cataclysmic for a white candidate, it carried little to no shock value and was not widely condemned because that is just the way things are. Not logical or reasonable, but it is what it is.

Racist attitudes and actions have entirely different standards and meanings as they are applied  to white and black Americans, and not only in Atlanta, but nationwide. How this got set into stone is amazing (the leftist Lame Stream media has obviously played a big roll since it ignores and/or buries such stories), but it is commonplace.

Imagine if an enth of white candidates and their supporters urged people to vote for the white candidate in political ads - just because and only because the candidate is white!? Front page news!  Outrage upon outrage!  But, it is standard operating procedure for black candidates.

And get ready for lots and lots more of it - even worse than before -  if it comes down to Norwood and Lance Bottoms, as it probably will.  Lance Bottoms can disavow and disclaim all she wants. But in Atlanta the watch word is "Keep Atlanta black" - just like the ad said - an the efforts to make that happen in the coming days will be as astounding as the are disgustingly racist.

Homegoing Service for Sgt. Zellner

Vietnam Veteran with the 5th Infantry Divison "Red Devils"

Sgt. Zellnners was and remains in our memory as a warm embracing community figure. He is survived by his kids, family and the community that loved him so dearly.

If at all possible we ask for any donation no matter how small to help with his home going arrangements.

No matter how hard times got he always found time to nurture, care and guild for the next generation not just his own family, in hopes of making the world a better place than it was upon entertering. He will be missed dearly

If we could all only heed the worlds of Atlanta native Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Sadly, most of today’s electorate on the democrat side vote skin color first and character second. Meanwhile many white Atlanta liberal citizens virtue signal with BLM signs in their front yards only to be living in some of the whitest of neighborhoods....

I’m not sure who actually listens to annoying Robocalls, but apparently many people are more patient than me.

AtlantanITP, you already have no credibility. When those of your R ilk use the term Democrat instead Democratic, its an insult. However, I totally agree with you WRT most black people voting Democratic. But how is that different than most white people voting Republican? Fox Noise and MSNBC do a major disservice to us all by screaming the same old tired crap: Pro Trump and Anti Trump respectively.

I have strongly encouraged my youngest son, who lives in Midtown to vote against whomever Reed endorses because I believe at his core, Reed is a lying snake

@RollDawg

Most white people in Atlanta vote Republican? Might as well flush their ballot down a toilet. Its a one party system in Atlanta.

@RollDawg  I encourage my son to vote for the candidate who has displayed some sort of honesty in their past. Not just promises to voters. What have they done over the last 10 years , 5 years? Have they done this job honorably or not. Its how you get promoted in the real world.

Remember Obama won two terms due to the “white vote” - he couldn’t get it done on the non-white vote alone. I vote on the candidate and not color. I’m also not an R (I loathe their party leadership and many of their politicians are full of it).

I like Mitchell and Norwood. Reed has done some good in Atlanta and I voted for him in his second term. It would be interesting to see Norwood as mayor just to shake things up around here.

Bottoms is clearly an operator.  Anyone who watched her attempt to discredit Senator Vincent Fort with false financial accusations has seen her scheming and aggressive character attacks.  On the other hand, Mary Norwood has enriched herself with her automated robocall business which may be responsible for several psychotic breaks admitted to Grady Hospital.  I hate to see women prove the past stated stereotypes of gossiping and back biting each other in order to get more attention.  Neither of these candidates appear worthy of a tax-payer salary or any authority over others.

@Ralph-43 you have no idea what you are talking about. Norwood hasn't owned a robocall business in 10 years and if you know anything about her,  she is not rich. the only psychotic that ever got out of Grady is YOU. ON the other hand Keisha owns 4 houses.one  on Martha Vineyard. And to be clear that's NOT in Atlanta.

@Ralph-43 Norwood used the least cost method of communicating with constituents.  She documented everything.  It was investigated and made an issue because that was the only thing the Reed Administration could come up with for Keisha.

Ralph-43 you are perpetuating a lie, but you probably know that.

Bottoms has been stirring up the race mess for several weeks now in the fine tradition of her mentor Reed. More city hall politics as usual....when you feel a little bit desperate, play the race card.

In ‘97 the Maynard machine played the color struck and Republican cards to defeat Marvin Arrington Sr. Ironically Maynard’s granddad was a lifelong Republican. The same thing is going on in the Keisha Ceasar battle. But you won’t hear hear that.

Bottoms is a racist. Period. She won't even make the runoff. Being pushed by a Kasim Reed and Co. her white support is at 4 percent. Good luck with that.

When are white people going to wake up and stop voting democrat? I fear to late and that the N words will not discriminate when they put the knives in their democratic supporting whitey backs.

uh...huh

@Olivia Coleman Bernard

Ms. Bernard, because of white-guilt there will always be whites that vote Democrat, the party of minorities in Georgia. The old Talmadge-Nunn yellow dogs are either dead or in the nursing homes.
