Andrew Young picks a new candidate in Atlanta mayor race

Former U.N. Ambassador Andrew Young will endorse Atlanta City Councilwoman Keisha Lance Bottom’s campaign for mayor as she readies for a Dec. 5 runoff against Councilwoman Mary Norwood.

Bottoms’ campaign said the endorsement from Young, a former Atlanta mayor and civil rights icon, will be formally announced on Wednesday at the Martin Luther King Jr. Recreation & Aquatic Center at 10:30 a.m.

Young earlier endorsed former City Council President Ceasar Mitchell, who finished in sixth-place in this month’s first round of voting. And Mitchell on Tuesday endorsed Norwood, triggering a war of words with Bottoms campaign and Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed.

Bottoms has picked up a sweep of other endorsements as she tries to consolidate Democratic support.

Jason Carter, the 2014 Democratic nominee for governor, joined a half-dozen current and former state lawmakers to back Bottoms on Monday. Stacey Evans, one of two Democratic candidates for governor in next year’s contest, backed her on Tuesday. (Bottoms said she would endorse Evans “at the appropriate time.”)

Meanwhile, more endorsements are in the works. Ex-state Sen. Vincent Fort is set to pick a side at a press conference scheduled this morning. He’s keeping tight-lipped, but he seems unlikely to throw his support behind Bottoms after warring with her and the mayor through much of the campaign.

And Cathy Woolard, who notched a surprisingly strong third-place finish, will hold an event next week with both candidates as she tries to hash out her pick for the city’s next leader.

Interesting that the people who are offended when blacks endorse other blacks are completely silent while Jeff Sessions admits he has no blacks in his upper level DOJ, and I watch Donald Trump flood his appointments with white males.

Once again we have selective outrage on the part of some.

Andy Young, Jason Carter, Stacey Evans etc. ALL making the mayors race partisan and ALL in lock-step agreement and goose-stepping their way to uniformly endorsing the WEAKEST candidate Atlanta has EVER known.

They ARE EMBARRASSMENTS!!

Why is it Republicans can be loyal to their party but expect Dems to forsake same?

Democrats no longer need to play by any rules as long as Republicans change the rules on a whim so they can stay in power. After Mitch McConnell stole a SCOTUS seat, you people have ceded any moral authority to complain about party loyalty over duty to country.

I sure hope the Feds are watching this election.  It was well past midnight when returns started trickling in for the recent ATL primary.  ALL other municipalities can upload their FULL counts to the Sec of State well before that.  What the HELL are ATLANTA POLL workers doing at their polls in ATLANTA (AND in FULTON CNTY during other elections)?

Who trusts this Secretary of State who can’t explain how the computers at KSU were wiped clean?

Not I.

Surprise, Surprise, seems like all black politicians support other blacks, even over a more qualified candidate? Keep Atlanta black, with rampant corruption, poor performing schools and high crime rates!

Ceasar Mitchell who is black is supporting Mary Norwood who is white

I think many people who are voting for Norwood are doing so because she leans Republican. Bottoms leans progressive/liberal so it has little to do with race but politics.

I wouldn’t vote for Mitch McConnell or Trump if they were black as night.

This issue is 4 or 8 more years of the corruption under the current Mayor's choice or taking a chance that Norwood will be honest.

As a poster below noted, the Mayor's choice can't even manage her own finances.  How's she going to do when the great big pocket book that is the airport is open to her?

But, the black community will block vote, the white community will but to a lesser extent.   If I were Norwood, I'd have multiple poll watchers at each voting site as the current people in power have a lot lose if Norwood wins

Why are people in DeKalb and Cobb endorsing for the City of Atlanta mayor?

This election will be a shock to some.  It will be the right choice for Atlantans who want a better City.  The handwriting is already on the wall.  It's gonna be great.

Andy Young endorses the Black candidate.  Well that is groundbreaking news.  Andy was once respected.  Andy Young is in the same Category as the Bush's.  All are in the closeout section of Kroger.  Way beyond their sell by date.

The black vote will go for Bottoms. Whom Aman and Woolard endorse will determine the runoff winner.

No way are the voters in the City of Atlanta going to elect a white person.

Keisha Bottoms CANNOT even manage her own finances. Why would ANYONE vote for that???

Andrew Young backs a black candidate.  How is it news when someone does exactly what everyone expects him to do?

Well, that's a real shocker. Not.

The Dems would have you believe a vote for Mary Norwood is a vote for trump.  But Reed, who famously has a short fuse, lashes out at anyone who disagrees with him; and City Hall, where corruption is rampant, is under a Federal investigation while a self-serving Reed who is the Marie Antoinette of Atlanta traffic rides around in limos and blue lights.  THAT sounds a LOT like the VERY person they'd like us to think Mary Norwood is.

DON'T BE FOOLED!!!!!

@NeboSuki1 I think Ceasar Mitchell challenging the mayor to a fight at a westside park is very Trumpian. Then there was a fist fight at a Keisha Bottons event. Mary Norwood and her goons are about to turn this race into a circus,
